I had the life of my dreams – a loving husband, a fulfilling job, and a healthy pregnancy. But after giving birth, everything unraveled. I didn’t just lose control of my life; I lost my mind.
I had never heard of postpartum psychosis. Despite my history of anxiety, depression, and my MPH degree, no one warned me. It hit like a freight train. Five sleepless days in, I was hospitalized, restrained, and sedated. My care was siloed and traumatic, despite the hospital having a Maternal Mental Health Program. It felt like a horror film. Through it all, my husband was my anchor. His tears in the ER made it real for both of us – but so did the laughter we shared as I healed.
Motherhood broke my illusion of perfection. EMDR therapy helped me release shame and reclaim joy. Now, as Founding Director of the California Perinatal Wellness Alliance, I share my story to push for systemic change. To struggling parents: you’re not alone. Ask for help – healing starts there.
